Why I'm Running

 

Like so many Americans, I am fed up with career politicians who have played partisan games and focused on winning their next office rather than working on behalf of the people they are supposed to serve. 

I am running to represent Florida in the U.S. Senate because we must turn our economy around, create jobs, and deliver real results – politics as usual just won’t do.  

I started with absolutely nothing and through hard work and determination built a successful business and created jobs.  I started working at a young age – as a bus boy and running paper routes – and I worked my way through college at Johns Hopkins and business school at Harvard.  I’ve lived the American dream and I’m running to preserve and protect that dream for my 6-month old son Malcolm and for all of Florida’s children. 

I will work every day to create jobs, revitalize our economy, end our dependence on foreign oil once and for all, implement the health care bill successfully, improve the quality of education, protect the environment, and ensure that Florida has a bright future. The number one issue facing Florida is jobs, and I am the only Senate candidate who has a strong record of job creation and a real plan to create new jobs for Florida.  

I am ready to take on Washington to get things done and do what is right for Florida.  I am the only candidate running for Senate who is an outsider, independent from the political system and not tied to career politicians and Washington insiders and the way they think.  Make no mistake, I am a Democrat. But I support policies that produce real results based on core Democratic principles, not based on what the political establishment or the special interests want.  

I believe that hard working Floridians should have a say in how their government is run, not the self-serving politicians, lobbyists and special interests who have failed us for too long.  That’s why I won’t take a penny of special interest money - in fact I won’t take a contribution over $100 from anybody.  And if I am elected, I will donate my salary to Florida charities. 

I am running for the Senate to give you a voice in Washington and to produce real results on the issues that matter to you. The career politicians have had their chance and they have failed…where are the results?  Now it is our turn to solve the challenges we face together.

I know what it means to lose everything and I understand the struggle working families in Florida are going through.  When I was young, my dad worked as a used textile machinery dealer until he lost his livelihood when the textile mills closed.  My family then struggled to make ends meet and we moved to Florida nearly 40 years ago to try and rebuild what we had lost. This taught me how quickly one can lose everything – even after working hard and playing by the rules – and I firmly believe that no American should live with that fear. 

My dad never really recovered from losing his business and I think about his struggles every day of my life.  That is why I have always tried to help those who are hurting or in pain – and the people who are hurting today are the people of Florida – you are the reason I am running and you are the hope for the future of Florida. 

I know how to create jobs and I will get you results.  This is our chance to take on the ‘more of the same’ politicians who keep running for office – all of them having the nerve to say they will change things, when it is them, who have held office year after year as things got worse that is exactly what we need to change. 

I offer a different choice.  Politics is not my career – and this campaign is not about me – it’s about all of us and whether or not we succeed as a nation.  The stakes are high and we must get the job done.   

I want to be your voice – and with you as my partner – I promise you, from the first day we take office, they will know we are there.  Now is our time.  I hope you will join my campaign and help make a real difference for Florida.
